December 19, 2023 Five Acres School in Altadena outdid themselves this year with their Christmas party. SNB rocked out to dancing and singing for these fortunate children; kudos Dorian Vaughn.

November 15th, 2023 Hey Howie,I must say what a profound experience today was for me. My apprehension and frustration was completely turned on its head. Right before the kids had their moment, I addressed the auditorium and said “on behalf of the SNB teachers I want to thank you for the opportunity to teach your wonderful children who so obviously have come from loving and caring homes. And if there is a chance to make the world a better place, the  demonstration of kindness, joy, love, and happiness will be carried on the shoulders of these wonderful children.” The kids were sitting on the floor about 10′ in front of the band. I told Michael, why don’t you sing the song and let me be with the kids and tell them when to change the chords of the song. …So there I was, barking out “change, change, back to the first chord”. To my great surprise some of the kids actually practiced from the time we last saw them on Monday, Wow! The 10 yr.-old girl I least expected to be able to pull this off was playing in time the first 3-chords of the cycle. The last 2 chords of Stand By Me are only 4 beats each so the transition to the 4 th chord was problematic, however I was surprised that they remembered an easy version of the D chord, played with one finger on the 7th fret that I showed them on Monday, I was shocked they remembered albeit the execution was not perfect. The student that knew all the chords was in the wrong place most of the time which surprised me since she was my prized student The little 8 yr.-old girl, Maria who was the bundle of energy that seemed not to focus, played the first 2-chords in the right place almost all of the time. There were a number of parents there taking videos of their beloved kids, proudly. After the concert some of the parents came up to me and complimented me on instructing their kids, and when I told them they could keep the guitars they were taken aback. I explained we got the money from the CA Arts Council, and were happy to do it. They asked me for a card suggesting maybe we could play at their church. It was all pretty heartwarming really. So, in the end, maybe we did some good, at least it felt that way. And maybe the real beneficiaries were the SNB teachers. We all thought the kids were too young but in the end, it was perfect.

October 27th, 2023 A phenomenon occurred at Cielo Vista Charter School in Palm Springs today, and it went down like this. First we played “Back to the Chicken Shack” and then the “Chicken”. Markus made a comment about the “Chicken Dance” being popular in Germany. Then Dean played a few notes from it and when we saw and heard the kids getting into it, we whipped up the whole tune and everybody went nuts including the teachers. We were all surprised. Kudos to Principal Perezchica. Thank you Anderson’s Children’s Foundation.

October 27th, 2023 To begin with, both principals in Palm Springs were outstanding, an inspiration, really; they made the concert and education portion a wonderful experience. The kids at Rancho Mirage ES had lots of questions and raised their hands, waiting respectfully to be called on. ” Why did we become musicians?” “How long have we been doing this?” These were some of the best kids we have played for. They had genuine interest. Thanks to The Anderson Children’s Foundation.
